「～として」のASと「～のような」のLIKE

今日のイギリス英語のレッスンは「as」と「like」の使いわけです。
とにかくイギリス英語で「as」と「like」がよく出てきます。
まずは、例文を見てください。

I worked as an actor for two years.
私は俳優として2年間働いた。

I went home early as I fell ill.
私は気分が悪かったので早退した。

He looks as if he hasn’t slept.
彼は寝てないように見える。

As you know, this is the third time I’ve had to complain.
あなたも知っているように、これは3回目の苦情です。

He looks like his dad.
彼は父親似だ。

She’s like a sister to me.
彼女は私にとって妹みたいなものだ。

Try to do something relaxing, like reading a book or having a bath.
何かしてリラックスしてみたら、本を読むとかお風呂に入るとか

「as」は「～として」「like」は「～のようだ」として使う。

as + adjective（形容詞） + as and as much as

as + adjective（形容詞）+ asと as much as は「AはBのように」やnotを入れることで「AはBのようではない」などの表現になる。

She loves curry as much as I do.
彼女は私と同じぐらいカレーが好き

He’s not as tall as his brother.
彼はお兄さんほど大きくない

It’s not as expensive as the other hotel.
他のホテルほど高くない。

That dog is as big as that child!
その犬はあの子供ぐらい大きい

その他によく使われる The same as「同じ」でnotを入れると「違う」となる

Your phone is the same as mine.
あなたの携帯は私のと同じです。

Texting is not the same as speaking in person.
テキストを送るのは直接話すのと違う。

テキストというのは、携帯どうして送るメールのようなものですが、あて先は相手の電話番号になります。

like + noun（名詞）

下の例文はlikeのあとに名詞か代名詞がはいり、「AはBのようだ」のような表現になる。

He’s like a father to me.
彼は父親みたいな人だ

She’s acting like a child.
彼女は子供のようにふるまっている。

It’s like a burger but with big mushrooms instead of bread.
ハンバーガのようだけど、パンのかわりに大きなキノコが使われている。

There are lots of people like us.
私たちのような人はたくさんいます。

as if/as + though + 文

as ifかas thoughを使うことで非現実を現実に重ねあわせる表現になる。

You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.
あなたは幽霊を見たようだ。

I felt as if I was floating above the ground.
私は浮いている気分だった。

You talk as though we’re never going to see each other again.
あなたは、私たちがもう二度と会わないかのような感じで話す。

like or such as

「like」と「such as」もイギリス英語ではちょくちょく使われる。どちらも「～のようだ」とか「～のように」
通常「like」「such as」のあとには「例えば的な文」がくる。

You could try a team sport like football, basketball or hockey.
あなたのチームは何かスポーツをしたら、例えばフットボールとかホッケーとか

You should take something soft, such as a towel, to lie on.
あなたは何か柔らかいものを持ってきて、例えばタオルとか、敷いて横になれるもの

as + noun（名詞）asのあとが職種や用途を表す。

I worked as a shop assistant for two years.
私はお店のアシスタントとして2年間働いた。

He used his coat as a blanket to keep warm.
彼はコートを毛布がわりにして寒さをしのいだ。

asは2つの文をつなぐ役割もする

as = because（理由）

All the tickets were sold out as we got there too late.
私たちが遅れたせいでチケットは売れ切れだった。

As the road was closed, I had to park on the next street.
道が通行止めだったため、隣の通りに車をとめなければいけなかった。

as = ‘while’ ‘during’（～の間）

She called as I was getting out of the bath.
私がお風呂からあがろうとしたとき彼女から呼ばれた。

As they were arriving, we were leaving.
彼らが到着したと同時に私たちが立ち去った。

as = ‘in the way that’ （～のように、～として）

As we expected, it started to rain.
予期していたように、雨が降りだした。

As you know, classes restart on 15 January.
あなたが知っているように、授業は1月15日に再開する。

As I said, I think this project will be a challenge.
私が言ったように、このプロジェクトは挑戦だ。
