「～にもかかわらず」という表現

「in spite of」「despite」「although」「even though」「though」
イギリス英語のなかでよく使われる上のフレーズは「～にもかかわらず」や「でも」という意味。

まずは例文いってみましょう。

Although we don’t agree, I think she’s a brilliant speaker.
私たちは同意してないが、私は彼女がすばらしい話してだと思っている。

Even though we don’t agree, I think she’s a brilliant speaker.
私たちが同意しなくても、私は彼女がすばらしい話してだと思っている。

In spite of the law, people continue to use mobile phones while driving.
法律で定められているにもかかわらず、人々は運転中に携帯を使っている。

Despite the law, people continue to use mobile phones while driving.
法律で定められているにもかかわらず、人々は運転中に携帯を使っている。

Although、even though、 in spite of 、despite は2つの文をつなぐために用いられる。
文頭で用いられることもあれば、文中で用いられることもある。

Despite the rain, we enjoyed the festival.
雨が降ったが、私たちはお祭りを楽しんだ。

We enjoyed the festival, despite the rain.
雨が降ったが、私たちはお祭りを楽しんだ。

Although、even though、 in spite of 、despiteの違いは使われる文の構造。

in spite of とdespite

in spite of とdespite のあとには名詞、動名詞（-ing）代名詞が用いられる。

They never made much money, in spite of their success.
彼らは成功したがじゅうぶんなお金をつくることはできなかった。

In spite of the pain in his leg, he completed the marathon.
ひざを痛めていたにもかかわらず、彼はマラソンを完走した。

Despite having a headache, I had a great birthday.
頭が痛かったが、すばらしい誕生日だった。

The train was cancelled. In spite of that, we arrived on time.
電車が運休になった。そうれでも私たちは時間どおり到着した。

in spite of 、despiteはthe fact thatと一緒に用いられることが多い

In spite of the fact that he worked very hard, he didn’t pass the exam.
彼は一生懸命がんばったが、試験はパスしなかった。

although とeven though

althoughとeven thoughのあとは主語と述語が用いられる。
even though がalthough  よりも感情をこめた表現のときに用いれる。

Although we saw each other every day, we didn’t really know each other.
私たちは毎日会っていたのに、お互いのことはあまり知らない。

Even though she spoke very quietly, he understood every word.
彼女は小さな声で話していたのに、彼はすべて理解した。

She didn’t get the job, even though she had all the necessary qualifications.
彼女は必要な資格はすべて持っていたのに、採用されなかった。

though

Though はalthoughとほぼ同じ意味で使われる。

Though I wasn’t keen on the film, I thought the music was beautiful.
映画はそんな好きじゃないけど、音楽はすばらしい。

Thoughは会話のなかでは文末に用いられることもある。

We waited ages for our food. The waiter was really nice, though.
私たちは注文したものが来るまでかなり待たされた。でもウェイターはとてもいい対応だったね。
