冠詞の「the」

今回の冠詞の「the」をほりさげていきます。
まずは、例文を見てください。

I’m going to bed.
私は寝ます。

I walk to work.
歩いて仕事にいきます。

My children are going to start school.
私の子供たちが学校に通いはじめました。

I visited the school yesterday.
私は学校をたずねました。

Mount Everest is in the Himalayas.
エベレストはヒマラヤ山脈にあります。

「the」を使う場合と使わない場合のルール

bedやworkやhomeには「the」はつけない

go to bed / be in bed
go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
go home / be at home / get home / stay at home

訳さずに次にいきます。

school、university、 prison、hospitalに「the」はつけない

start school / go to school / be at school
go to university / be at university
be sent to prison / go to prison / be in prison
go to hospital / be in hospital

「the」をつける場合もある⁉　

上の名詞の前に「the」をつける場合もあります。
例えば、学校の生徒や先生でない人が学校に行く場合などがそれにあたります。

My son has started school now. I went to the school to meet his teacher.
私の息子が学校に通いはじめた。私は彼の先生に会いに学校へいった。

I went to the prison a lot when I was a social worker.
私がソーシャルワーカーだったころ刑務所によく行きました。

I’m at the hospital. My sister has just had a baby.
私は今病院にいます。私の妹に赤ちゃんが生まれました。

場所やエリアの名前

国名、都市名、町名、湖、山には「the」はなし

Africa, Asia, Europe
India, Ghana, Peru, Denmark
Addis Ababa, Hanoi, New York, Moscow
Lake Victoria, Lake Superior, Lake Tanganyika
Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus
Cardiff University, Harvard University, Manchester University

国名のなかには、すでに「the」が国名としてついているものは例外

the United Arab Emirates（アラブ首長国連邦）
the United Kingdom（グレート・ブリテン及び北部アイルランド連合王国）
the United States of America（アメリカ合衆国）
the Bahamas（バハマ）
the Gambia（ガンビア共和国）

海、山脈、川には「the」はつける

the Atlantic（大西洋）
the Pacific（太平洋）
the Mediterranean（地中海）
the Andes（アンデス山脈）
the Himalayas（ヒマラヤ山脈）
the Alps（アルプス山脈）
the Nile（ナイル川）
the Amazon（アマゾン）
the Yangtze（揚子江）

大学名というときにuniversityを先にいうときは、universityの前に「the」をつける

the University of Cape Town（ケープタウン大学）
the University of Delhi（デリー大学）
the University of Tokyo（東京大学）
